To drive farm prosperity in Uttar Pradesh, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur has announced to establish four agri-business incubators in the state.

The proposed incubators will be facilitated by the Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC) of the IIT Kanpur.

The decision was taken during an agricultural workshop titled ‘Uttar Pradesh Krishi Prayogiki Manthan’ held at IIT Kanpur yesterday in association with the UP department of agricultural research and education.

The collaborative effort demonstrates a commitment to driving positive change and propelling UP towards a sustainable and prosperous future in agriculture.

“Agricultural sector will play a pivotal role in realising the objective of creating a trillion-dollar economy in UP, and transforming India into a developed nation by 2047,” UP additional chief secretary, agriculture, Devesh Chaturvedi noted.

He added there is a pressing need for the emergence of startups as 65 percent of the workforce still relies on agriculture.

Prof Ankush Sharma, Professor-in-Charge at SIIC, said the responsibility offers an opportunity to IIT Kanpur to forge meaningful collaborations with agricultural universities and helping them set up agri-business incubation centres.

The workshop brought representatives from various agricultural universities including Kanpur, Banda, Ayodhya, Meerut and Prayagraj districts.

The participants discussed setting up the innovation hubs, emphasizing the need for collaboration and strategic planning. The workshop provided insights into the operational aspects, emphasising the key factors essential to their successful establishment.

SIIC conducted informative sessions covering topics such as project report preparation, incubation system functioning, and critical considerations for incubation centre success.

The SIIC is among the oldest incubators in India. It was established in 2000 when the entrepreneurial ecosystem was still at a nascent stage in India.
