Amid a strategic farm outreach by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government ahead of the high stake 2022 Uttar Pradesh elections, the state government has logged 800,000 tonnes in paddy procurement so far.

In the ongoing kharif marketing season that kicked off in October 2021, the state agencies and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have together bought about 800,000 tonnes of paddy from 100,000 farmers under the minimum support price (MSP) mechanism.

According to UP food and civil supplies commissioner Saurabh Babu, the state paddy procurement was already to the tune of more than Rs 1,453 crore and counting. The process will gain momentum in the weeks to come.

Earlier, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had instructed officials to ensure smooth purchase of the paddy crop through regular monitoring and surprise inspection of the purchase centres.

Moreover, adequate arrangements have also been made to protect the crop from unfavourable weather conditions including rainfall.
