The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has allowed the net metering facility to the government and private educational institutions.

Till now, the facility was available only for private tube wells and metered domestic consumers.

The provision was extended to the educational institutions by amending the UPERC (Rooftop Solar PV Grid Interactive System Gross/Net Metering) Regulations, 2019.

The amendment is likely to benefit about 200,000 consumers and improve the viability of educational institutions in the state.

Earlier, the Commission had issued a consultation paper for the proposed amendment of the net metering provisions provided in the UP Solar Policy, and invited comments and suggestions from stakeholders. A public hearing was conducted on November 8, 2023.

Meanwhile, the benefits of the amendment will also accrue to the power distribution companies (discoms) as the total quantum of solar electricity generated under the net metering arrangement shall qualify towards Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) for the distribution licensee.
