Uttar Pradesh has topped in opening the no-frills Jan Dhan bank accounts and also boasts the highest number of women beneficiaries of the flagship central scheme.

The state also leads in implementation of other central government welfare schemes for the underprivileged under UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s strict monitoring, a state official said.

According to the latest union finance ministry report, UP tops the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana rankings.

While the number of Jan Dhan account holders nationwide exceeds 520 million, UP alone accounts for over 93.3 million with nearly 50 million women account holders.

As of May 29, 2024, there were 67.18 million account holders residing in rural and semi-urban areas, while 26.18 million lived in the urban and metropolitan cities in UP.

Altogether, more than Rs 47,427 crore were deposited in these 93.36 million Jan Dhan accounts.

At the same time, the number of RuPay cardholders in UP is more than 60 million, the highest in the country.

All financial benefits from the government, whether from the Centre, state or local bodies, are delivered directly to the accounts of the beneficiaries through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for transparency in the process.
