The Uttar Pradesh government is bracing up to launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven road safety model in the state.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has granted formal No Objection Certificate (NOC) for UP’s pioneering road safety pilot project powered by AI and big data analytics.

The union ministry confirmed the initiative complies with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989; and involves no financial liability for the central government.

The project marks India’s first AI-powered road safety initiative to be executed at zero cost by public sector enterprise ITI Limited in collaboration with global tech firm mLogica.

The Yogi Adityanath government has already set the foundation for a data-driven administrative model by allocating ₹10 crore in the UP Annual Budget 2025–26.

The initial proof-of-concept phase will run for six weeks, during which AI models will be developed by integrating data related to accident reports, weather patterns, vehicle telematics, driver profiles and road infrastructure.

The objective is to identify root causes of road accidents, predict accident-prone zones (black spots) and develop real-time policy dashboards.

Upon successful testing, the AI engine will be scaled up across key transport services—such as the faceless license and permit system, enforcement modernization, revenue collection, e-challan system, and the Vahan-Sarathi platform—positioning UP as a national leader in tech-enabled governance.

Insights from the pilot phase will be used to integrate the AI analytical core with other digital services of the department.

The faceless driving license and permit system will be powered by automated, AI-based decision-making. Future modules will include real-time fraud detection, vehicle status mapping, and predictive violation monitoring, enhancing the precision of enforcement and on-spot actions.

The AI engine will also facilitate interoperability across revenue administration, e-challan processing, and the Vahan-Sarathi databases, enabling automated alerts and risk scoring related to tax liabilities, fee payments, and document validity.

This integrated digital dashboard will offer a comprehensive view of revenue, violations, and document status, leading to data-driven policymaking, efficient resource allocation, and enhanced public accountability.

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh stated that implementation has already begun, with the ITI-mLogica team collaborating with the department’s IT, enforcement and road safety divisions.

A detailed report will be submitted to MoRTH upon project completion. The initiative will maintain continuous audits on data privacy, legal compliance, and cybersecurity standards.

He emphasised the project is expected to significantly reduce road accidents, strengthen scientific enforcement, and improve service transparency, underscoring the Yogi government’s commitment to leveraging technology for good governance.

He noted that by extending this AI model beyond road safety to core departmental functions, UP aims to become a national pioneer in data-driven governance.
