Nearly 5 million sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh are set to benefit from Uttar Pradesh’s long-term strategic plan aimed at boosting the cane sector.

The Yogi Adityanath government 2.0 has formulated a comprehensive 5-year strategy to transform the comprehensive sugarcane and sugar industry in the state.

The roadmap focuses on a wide range of initiatives, including modernisation of sugar mills, setting up of new distilleries, production of sulphur-free sugar, increasing sugarcane yield, expanding cultivation area and improving the sugar recovery rate.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath is personally monitoring the implementation of this plan, and regularly reviews its progress to ensure effective and timely execution.

Since 2017, the UP sugarcane farmers have received almost Rs 2,86,000 crore in cane arrears.

In the last eight years, the area under the sugarcane crop has increased by about 44 perecent.

In 2016–17, sugarcane was grown on 2.054 million hectares (MH); which touched 2.95 MH in 2024-25. The productivity has also increased from 72.38 tonnes to 84.10 tonnes per hectare.

The government believes that sugarcane production and productivity in UP can be doubled through smart planning, tech-driven payment systems and reforms.

To enhance farm profitability, the state is also promoting seasonal mixed-cropping among farmers.

Since 2017, the Yogi government reopened all closed sugar mills in UP, and increased the capacity of more than 18 dozen units.

New sugar mills were started in Pipraich, Munderwa and Ramala. In Ramala (Baghpat), the crushing capacity was increased from 2,750 TCD to 5,000 TCD, along with the installation of a 27 MW co-generation plant.

Today, 122 sugar mills, 236 khandsari units, 8,707 traditional kolhus, 65 co-generation plants and 44 distilleries are operational across 45 districts of UP.

These units have a combined crushing capacity of 7,856 KLPD, and provide direct employment to almost a million people.
