In a step towards women empowerment, Uttar Pradesh has raised the ceiling for stamp duty waiver applicable to women property buyers.

Under the new policy, property purchased in the name of women worth up to Rs 1 crore — including land or house — will now receive a 1% exemption on stamp duty.

So far, this benefit was limited to properties worth up to Rs 10 lakh, with a maximum exemption of Rs 10,000.

Now, the exemption has been extended to properties valued up to Rs 1 crore with the maximum exemption capped at Rs 1 lakh.

This decision was among the total 37 proposals approved at the UP cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath yesterday.

UP labour minister Anil Rajbhar said the move will help middle-class women become property owners.

“It will not only boost their confidence, but also make them financially stronger and more respected in society,” he added.

The central government had also proposed reducing stamp duty on property deeds in favour of women in the 2024 Budget.

This initiative is likely to increase the number of property registrations in women’s names, contributing to the success of the Mission Shakti campaign.
