Uttar Pradesh, which is India’s top electric mobility market, is bullish on the sector’s growth going forward.
The state government is giving subsidies to promote e-mobility and cut vehicular pollution.
So far, the state has disbursed subsidies worth almost Rs 950 crore to electric vehicle (EV) customers.
With sales of roughly 370,000 e-vehicles (EV) in the financial year 2024-25, UP topped the growing industry’s all-India chart followed by Maharashtra (240,000), Karnataka (170,000), Tamil Nadu (132,000) etc.
The government offers incentives for buying new 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and cars to catalyse the EV adoption.
The amended UP Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Policy 2022 aims to make EVs accessible to individuals and commercial entities, and cut vehicular emissions to align with the federal goals.
Recently, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had announced his government would accord priority to the procurement of ‘Made in UP’ e-buses to boost the sector and generate local employment.
This is expected to boost the setting up of greenfield and brownfield EV plants in the state.
The UP State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is looking to increase its buses’ fleet size from 13,000 at present to 25,000 by 2027.
Since, the majority of these buses would be electric, the Yogi government is sanguine it would spur private investment in the EV manufacturing landscape in UP.
The CM asked the UP transport department to ensure the new buses being procured are manufactured within UP.
UPSRTC is also setting up electric depots in 8 cities, each equipped with 4 to 8 universal chargers of 240 kW capacity.
Meanwhile, UP is developing 23 world-class bus terminals under the public private partnership (PPP) model, with another 54 terminals planned in the second phase, of which the construction of 50 is already underway.
In 2024-25, the UP transport department reported the registration of 3.79 million new vehicles, while 1.1 million vehicles were registered during the first quarter (Apr-June) of 2025-26.
Moreover, the UP State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) has partnered with the Central Electronics Limited (CEL) to modernise the state’s industrial ecosystem by making it sustainable and energy-efficient.
The partnership includes developing EV charging stations in industrial areas and integrating the EV charging infra with renewable energy.
This partnership is a step towards creating sustainable and smart industrial hubs, while also paving the way for a move towards Net Zero emissions in UP, UPSIDA CEO Mayur Maheshwari said.
