The Uttar Pradesh government is betting big on the potential of the biogas value chain to power vehicles.

This step is aimed at boosting UP’s rural economy by recycling organic matter such as cow dung as envisioned by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

Methane will be produced from cow dung on a large-scale to power vehicles over long distances, thus creating rural jobs and strengthening the green economy.

According to experts, cow dung from a single cattle can yield methane equivalent to 225 litres of petrol every year.

The compressed biogas (CBG), produced after a purification process, can drive a car over 5,500 km.

UP Go-Sewa-Aayog Chairman Shyam Bihari Gupta said from stray bovines, the state receives about 5.4 million kg of dung per day.

This dung can be processed in CBG plants for purposes ranging from methane production to household cooking fuel in rural areas, heating fuel for small industries, and as an organic solution in natural farming.

The OSD of the Go-Sewa-Aayog Dr Anurag Srivastava said methane farming can become an alternative to fossil fuels.

The UP-Government’s initiative in this area is promoting the concept of ‘Waste to Wealth’ which will provide effective fuel for transportation and the green economy.

The methane produced from the dung of each bovine is a form of natural gas, which is both environmentally friendly and economical.
