Silk production or sericulture is empowering women in the backwaters of Uttar Pradesh.
The State Rural Livelihood Mission, in collaboration with the UP silk department, has rolled out a silk production program.
It spans 25 development blocks in six districts viz. Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Basti, Deoria, and Ayodhya.
The self-help groups (SHGs), formed under the enabling policies framed by the Yogi Adityanath government, are proving to be transformative for rural women.
These groups have significantly boosted women’s income, leading to an improved standard of living and social status.
Under the Mission, specialised training programs and field visits are organised for mission staff and ‘Resham Sakhi’ which refers to women engaged in sericulture.
These women receive training in modern silk production techniques and industry management at various stages.
It upgrades their skills and equips them with knowledge aligned with evolving industry demands.
Apart from sericulture, other initiatives are being undertaken to promote handicrafts, agro-based industries, and local products in UP.
