The Yogi Adityanath government 2.0 in Uttar Pradesh has partnered with Google Cloud to launch an array of cloud-based farmers’ and agritech services.
The Gemini-powered Beckn-enabled ‘UP Open Network for Agriculture’ to be facilitated by Google will provide UP farmers with one-stop access to essential services viz. advisory services, credit, mechanisation and market linkages to sell their produce.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday (Jan 7) between UP chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and Ashish Wattal, Managing Director, Google Cloud, India & SAARC.
Through Google’s Gemini agentic framework, the farmers will access the cloud network by voice commands in the language of their choice.
The languages currently supported include Hindi, Bangla, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, and Punjabi.
The Beckn Open Network for Agriculture in UP is designed as a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), and is part of the state’s efforts to digitise the agri ecosystem.
This is the first-of-its-kind DPI for agriculture by an Indian state. It leverages Google Cloud’s DPI-in-a-box offering and the Beckn Protocol, an open standard that enables interoperability and decentralised discovery of products and services.
Unlike traditional marketplaces that operate as closed ecosystems, the network is built to be open and decentralised. Any service provider – from input suppliers to financial institutions to government agencies – can join the network and connect with farmers.
Conversely, anyone can curate these services and build their own farmer-facing solutions, fostering innovation and competition.
“The Open Network for Agriculture is a significant step towards achieving our vision of doubling farmer incomes in UP. This is a strong demonstration of our commitment to good governance and digital empowerment by equipping farmers with the tools and resources they need to thrive in the 21st century,” Singh noted.
Bikram Singh Bedi, Vice President and Country MD, Google Cloud India, said UP is among India’s largest agricultural states, with millions of farmers contributing to the nation’s food production.
Google Cloud is the new way to cloud technology, providing AI, infrastructure, developer, data, security, and collaboration tools.
It offers a powerful, fully integrated and optimised AI stack with its own planet-scale infrastructure, custom-built chips, generative AI models and development platform, as well as AI-powered applications, to help organizations transform.
