The world-famous Banarasi sari of Kashi or Varanasi will feature at the grandiose Ambani family wedding on July 12 in Mumbai.
The finery will highlight the global recognition of this One District, One Product (ODOP) specimen.
The granting of ODOP status to Banarasi sari together with the acquisition of the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag has propelled the craftsmanship of Kashi artisans to an international level.
Whether it is the film industry or the world’s leading industrialists, in this case the Ambanis, the Banarasi sari is widely adored and adorned by all on special occasions.
Likewise, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani selected the exquisite sari brand for her son Anant’s wedding with Radhika Merchant slated at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.
Earlier, Nita Ambani visited Varanasi to offer prayers at the reverred Kashi Vishwanath Dham and to purchase a range of Banarasi saris for the wedding.
By acting as brand ambassadors for GI products and ODOP scheme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath have given a new market to the country’s artisans.
GI expert Padma Shri Dr Rajni Kant said Banarasi sari is entirely handloom and silk creation, which is both impeccable and inimitable.
Banarasi sari exporter Praveen Agrawal said the showcasing of the product at the Ambani family wedding would further bolster the status of the GI product and rejuvenate its market internationally.
