Amid Omicron scare, Uttar Pradesh has proclaimed self reliance in medical oxygen by commissioning 551 plants so far.

In UP, the peak demand for medical oxygen, during the hardest hit April and May 2021 in the second wave of pandemic, had breached the level of 1,000 tonnes per day.

However, the actual supply of medical oxygen was negligible then. The state had diverted industrial oxygen to meet the demand from hospitals and home quarantine patients.

According to the state government, 23 oxygen plants have become functional in the past two weeks. The government is working on a mission mode to ensure the availability of medical resources.

UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed for establishing the 10 under-construction oxygen plants in a time-bound manner.

“Vaccination has proved to be effective in fighting new variants like Omicron. Hence, the pace of the ongoing vaccination drive should be expedited,” he ordered. The state has made oxygen plants mandatory in hospitals with more than 50 beds. Besides, O2 plants are being set up at the community and primary health centres.

“Keeping in mind the vitality of medical liquid oxygen in the treatment of Covid patients, the new plants will help the state fight possible future waves of the pandemic,” the official underlined.

Moreover, ITI trainees have been engaged in operation of oxygen plants to strengthen Covid Control Management and to connect youth with jobs. The government is conducting special training for paramedical staff and pharmacists.
