To spur deep research in space technology and explore the possibility of life in outer space, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur has set up an exclusive department of Space Science and Astronomy.

The department will allow exploratory efforts in the field of Space Science to answer some pertinent questions such as, whether there is life in outer space, whether other planets are inhabitable, the science behind black holes, or whether asteroids can be mined or not.

The department will contribute towards enriching our understanding of the Universe, the solar system and all the other celestial objects by attracting faculties and researchers who work in these new and emerging areas of research.

The department will offer both undergraduate and graduate degree programs (Masters and PhD), with students having opportunities to participate in ongoing (Astrosat, Chandrayaan 2) and upcoming (Aditya L1, Gaganyaan) space missions.

The students will have career opportunities to work for space organizations, such as the ISRO, and private space companies in India and abroad.

The department will be one of the first-of-its-kind in India to bring together engineers, astronomers, astrophysicists, and planetary scientists in order to meet the growing requirement of education, training and research in such fields as instrumentation for space missions and astronomical observatories, spacecraft design, and space mission planning.

Another department of Design has also been created, thus taking the total number of departments in the IIT Kanpur to 20, up from 14 four years back.

“We have been continuously revamping our curricula periodically to suit the changing education ecosystem, and the setting up of new departments is part of that process. These two new departments in the fields of Design, and Space Science and Astronomy will facilitate research and innovation in these crucial sectors and broaden up the ever-expanding horizon of research at IIT Kanpur,” Institute Director Prof Abhay Karandikar said.

Now, IIT Kanpur is planning to launch a Bachelor of Design programme starting next year. It will also expand its Master of Design and PhD programmes, which in past have attracted recruiters from Microsoft, Nokia, Google, Oracle, Infosys, TCS etc.

IIT Kanpur beats pandemic with bullish placements

It will forge collaborative relationships with international design schools such as the Stanford University, Alto University, and Georgia Tech.
