Donning the mantle of Santa, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath will give away free tablets and smartphones to the youth on Saturday.

On the day of Christmas, Yogi will distribute 100,000 of these gadgets to the beneficiaries at a programme in Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium, Lucknow.

Interestingly, Dec 25 also marks the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, among the tallest leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The CM will distribute 60,000 smartphones and 40,000 tablets to the final year students of MA, BA, BSc, ITI, MBBS, MD, BTech, MTech, PhD etc.

He will also launch ‘Digi Shakti’ Portal and ‘Digi Shakti Adhyayan App’ on the occasion. The app is preinstalled on these smartphones and tablets.

Earlier, the UP government had announced to distribute smartphones and tablets to 10 million youth to spur digital learning.

According to UP special secretary, IT and electronics Kumar Vineet, 3.8 million youth have already registered themselves for availing of the benefit.

The government has given orders to vendors such as Samsung, Lava and Acer for supplying smartphones and tablets. In the first phase, an order of about Rs 2,000 crore has been issued.
